About Anchorage
Ranked among the "Top 10 Best Cities to Live”, Anchorage is a majestic, family-friendly city of 300,000, flanked by the Chugach Mountains and the ocean. The city is a major port, a railroad hub, and home to the world’s third busiest cargo airport. Other industries include tourism, commercial fishing, the mineral and mining industry, two local military bases, and a growing energy sector. The air is clean, the water is clean, and the mountains are breathtakingly beautiful!
Set in scenic Southcentral Alaska, Anchorage is the largest city in the state, combining a thriving cultural and urban sophistication with unparalleled year-round opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. With excellent public and private schools, two universities and a vibrant international airport, Anchorage offers the best of metropolitan amenities with small town values.
For the sportsman and hobbyist, there is fabulous fishing, hunting, trekking, biking, Alpine skiing, mountain climbing, hockey, golf, softball, baseball, kayaking, outdoor photography and more. Our hospital campus connects to a trail system that extends for more than 250 miles.
The local arts community offers an orchestra, choir, museums, theater groups, and visiting artists and performers. Anchorage has shopping malls, boutiques, local Native craft and clothing stores, and a large number of excellent restaurants.
Protected by the Chugach Mountains and warmed by Japanese currents in the Pacific Ocean, Anchorage’s climate is actually quite mild year-round. Spring through fall, the climate is similar to San Francisco's spring weather, with temperatures reaching into the 70s. Summer highs average 65 degrees. Winters bring on the snow with high temperatures dipping into the 20s, creating a climate very much like ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains, Canada or Europe.
There is no state income tax in Alaska and no sales tax in Anchorage.
