Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center

Until the middle of the 20th century, the notion of a “leisure retirement” was almost unknown in the United States. Then, with the beginning of Social Security and Medicare, and with Americans’ increasing life spans, the concept of leisurely retirement was born...in Arizona.

At the forefront of this retirement revolution was Arizona businessman Del E. Webb, who partnered with landowner James Boswell. Together, they created Sun City, an active retirement community. At its grand opening in 1960, Sun City attracted more than 100,000 visitors and a new era of retirement was born in the United States.

As Sun City expanded, the need for a hospital grew as well. Volunteers and other community leaders organized in 1966, and their efforts led to the opening of what is now known as Banner Boswell Medical Center in 1970.

It was obvious there was a greater need for healthcare services in the area than Boswell could provide. In 1988, the hospital now known as Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center was built. The hospital soon grew to 332 beds and by 2009 increased to 404 licensed beds with the addition of a new wing.

Due to an increase in the number of families moving into the area, Banner Del E. Webb broadened the scope of medical and clinical services. It excels in providing acute medical and surgical services as well as intensive care, emergency and urgent care, inpatient /outpatient surgery, cardiac catheterization, neurology, orthopedics, oncology, urology, pulmonary, obstetrics and gynecology, extended care, outpatient diagnostic services, acute and outpatient rehabilitation and adult behavioral services.

A new, 175,000-square-foot, six-story tower opened January 2009 making Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center the eighth largest hospital in the Valley. The addition added an expanded Emergency department and 74 more licensed beds. The hospital has the ability to add an addition 92 beds in the future.
