Banner – University Medical Center South

Banner – University Medical Center South (formerly University of Arizona Medical Center – South Campus) is a comprehensive medical center that includes an Emergency department, a state-designated trauma center and a Behavioral Health Pavilion. We are an Arizona Department of Health Services-accredited Cardiac Receiving Center and a Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders-designated senior-friendly hospital. The hospital is staffed by Banner – University Medicine physicians and is managed by Banner Health under an operating agreement with Pima County. Our specialty services include inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, treatment and education for diabetes, innovative geriatric care and comprehensive orthopedics.

Community Involvement

Banner Health continues to build great relationships in the community. Our organization supports the community through a variety of programs, including free screenings, physician referrals, state-of-the-art research, sponsorship of charitable causes and participation in community events. We serve a diverse group of organizations and are proud to give back to our dedicated community.

The Pima County Community Health Needs Assessment shows how Banner – University Medical Center is part of our community through its medical services, community outreach and external relations programs.

We also aim to improve the health care of Arizonans by fostering and achieving cultural equity and sensitivity within the state's educational and health care systems through the University of Arizona College of Medicine’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

In 2015, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center South accepted the Ben's Bells Be Kind Challenge. The Be Kind Challenge encourages the community to complete 1,000 acts of kindness over the course of the year.

Our Mission

As the leading nonprofit provider of health care in every community we serve, Banner Health is deeply committed to our mission: “To make a difference in people's lives through excellent patient care.”  As a nonprofit, Banner Health exists to provide health care services to the communities we serve, rather than generate profits. That means that every dollar we earn is reinvested into:

  • New hospital beds
  • New or expanding patient care services
  • New physician services
  • New technologies
  • Maintaining existing equipment and facilities
  • Paying employees’ salaries

Banner also provides more than $153 million in charity care through our Financial Assistance Program. In addition, we subsidize the medical education costs for hundreds of medical residents (physicians in training), the majority of whom will stay in Arizona and Colorado, where they trained.  Additionally, Banner provides important, free services like the Banner Good Samaritan Poison and Drug Information Center Hotline, health information provided by registered nurses through our Banner Health Call Center, and school-based health centers for kids in economically challenged areas.  Clinics throughout the Banner Health system also help the working uninsured or under-insured by providing care at a reduced or sliding-fee basis (based on income).

Our Vision

Our Vision is: “We will be a national leader recognized for clinical excellence and innovation, preferred for a highly coordinated patient experience, and distinguished by the quality of our people.”

Our Vision statement paints a picture of what our goals are for the future. It clearly defines the work we must do and connects to the behaviors we must demonstrate to achieve these goals within the next five years:

  • Be recognized for clinical excellence and innovation
  • Develop a highly coordinated patient experience
  • Be distinguished by the quality of our people

Innovation

Innovation is a cornerstone of Banner's mission and vision. How Banner defines innovation: "Innovation at Banner is defined as the rapid identification and deployment of strategies leveraging Banner’s operating model and the science of care delivery to ensure an extraordinary patient experience, which is safe, efficient and effective."
