Community Profile

Rice Lake, located in the beautiful Red Cedar River valley, is the largest community in Barron County. With a population of just over 9,000, Rice Lake has many of the offerings of city life, nestled among some of the most beautiful features nature has to offer.

Rice Lake had its beginning in 1864 when Knapp, Stout and Company constructed a storage dam on the site of a former Indian village and a wild rice bed, leading to the name Rice Lake. In 1871, a mill was started by M.W. Heller, the first permanent settler to move his family to Rice Lake. Heller went on to be in charge of the first store, hotel and blacksmith shop, which made the settlement the center for northern operations of Knapp, Stout and Company.

In the Rice Lake area, you will find some of the finest ATV trails, fishing and boating lakes, parks, walking/running/ski trails and scenery in northwest Wisconsin. There is never a shortage of wonderful outdoor opportunities.

Each summer, enjoy all that the city’s 10-day Aquafest festival has to offer, such as national musical acts, carnival rides, food and family activities. Take in the local farmers market, stroll by the lake and the historic downtown, and peruse the work of local artists in the downtown’s unique art exhibit, ArtScape on Main.

When you’re ready to bring things indoors, Rice Lake offers exceptional dining options, a charming downtown shopping district, local theatre productions, an indoor community pool, shopping mall and movie theatre.

Rice Lake is a great place to live, work and raise a family. Enjoy quality schools, safe neighborhoods, short commutes and clean air and water in this quaint northwoods gem.
