San Mateo Medical Center

San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC), located in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a public hospital and clinic system operating outpatient clinics throughout San Mateo County, and an acute-care hospital in San Mateo. SMMC is part of the County of San Mateo Health System. Our innovative approaches, collaborative environment and progressive suburban setting make us unique among public hospitals. Our medical center is on a human scale—large enough but not too large and impersonal. We treat a culturally diverse group of working families with complex and challenging needs and are leaders in language access with one of the first medical centers in the nation to implement real-time voice and video language interpretation.

• Providers are deeply involved in daily performance improvement activities as well as week-long improvement events
• Many of our leaders began their journey in our primary care clinics taking care of patients before moving into leadership roles throughout our medical center
• Our Health System offers an array of training opportunities, including an in-house Leadership Academy dedicated to training and supporting future leaders, special projects and training opportunities as a member of the California Association of Public Hospitals (CAPH), and online and in-person training focused on daily work skills and personal growth

In addition to our excellent benefits package, we also offer a Physician Development Program that encourages primary care physicians to spend up to 10% of salaried time thinking, creating and advancing new and improved delivery systems. The program includes up to eighty hours of self-designed, professional study that can be spent at intensive workshops, in ongoing classes, or even in self-study programs.
