Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, a 274-bed acute care facility, offers the perfect combination of life-saving technology in a healing environment. Clinical services include: the Sentara Heart Center, the portal to a sophisticated array of quality cardiac services with outcomes that surpass national standards; one of only eight Primary Stroke Centers in Virginia certified by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; the regions only Level III Trauma Center; a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Palliative Care Program; an Intensive Care Unit featuring 24-hour, seven day a week coverage by intensivists and a Hospitalist Program. In addition, SVBGH services include the Coastal Cancer Center; Diabetes Center; Orthopaedics; Accredited Sleep Disorders Center; and an Inpatient Rehab unit coming in late 2007.

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital has adopted a philosophy of care that creates a healing environment for patients, visitors and staff. In 2005, the new West Wing opened offering all private patient rooms with a focus on family-friendly design. Patients recover in a home-like setting with private showers, overnight accommodations for family members, and Internet access and entertainment options via GetWell Network in every patient room. Guests appreciate the comfortable family lounges and unrestricted visiting hours.

SVBGH offers services designed to enhance the hospital experience, such as a concierge, courtesy shuttle in the parking lot, massage therapy, pet therapy, and a Guest Services program for out-of-town visitors. An outdoor garden and labyrinth provide a natural setting for reflection and relaxation. The main lobby creates a soothing atmosphere with its baby grand piano, cascading water feature, original artwork and a Bistro serving Starbucks coffee.

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital was the recipient of the prestigious Move the Model Award from Planetree in 2006. SVBGH also received the highest score in Virginia in the Leapfrog category of Urban Hospitals. Leapfrog is a third-party organization encouraging hospitals to adopt high standards for ICU staffing, CPOE and best practices in patient safety.

In addition, SVBGH was honored for two consecutive years (2001 and 2002) as one of the nation's top performing hospitals in the 100 Top Hospitals National Benchmarks for Success study conducted by Solucient, a health care information company. One of only two Virginia hospitals, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital was named in Solucients first 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders study in 2004.

Live the Mission: Be Tobacco Free. Effective January 1, 2008, Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital will be the first hospital in the region to become a 100% tobacco free environment by eliminating all tobacco products from the facility and campus, including parking lots. The goal is to help staff, patients and visitors adopt a healthier lifestyle through smoking cessation and to provide a healthier environment for everyone at SVBGH by eliminating the effects of second-hand smoke.
