The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, UW Health Portage Clinic, in Portage, Wisconsin, is interested in a Family Medicine physician to provide the full spectrum of family medicine skills in an outpatient clinic. This position will be involved in clinical teaching of medical students and other learners. This position may involve academic scholarly work.
This clinic has a small-town feel with the support of a large, academic system and connections with specialists.
Overview of Position:
DFMCH is seeking family medicine physicians who encompass a variety of skills that relate to how they engage with patients and work in teams. Faculty at UW-Madison have the opportunity for professional growth that will allow them to pursue additional clinical and academic interests. In addition to their clinic roles, faculty may have opportunities to practice OMT, Integrative Health, inpatient medicine, POCUS, and more. There are also opportunities in the medical school for formal teaching roles, may be opportunities within the organization for leadership roles, and may also be scholarly research focused projects and committees that a faculty member can participate. Clinical duties are defined with department leadership approval based on the finalists career interests and based on the clinical needs.
Community: Portage, WI is located just north of Madison. Some providers and staff live in Madison, and some live in Portage. Portage offers the small-town feel, and Madison provides urban amenities. Working in Portage offers options as it relates to your community preferences.
Portage, WI (population estimated 10,000), is located in Columbia County and is one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin. It is named for the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, a portage between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Portage s small-town charm and a high quality of life has something to offer residents of all ages. The downtown retail district has a variety of quaint shops with well-preserved original Victorian architecture. Portage also boasts an array of cultural activities, restaurants, affordable housing, and is recognized statewide for its outstanding public education system.
The abundance of recreational activities in the area will keep you busy all year long. In the summer months, you will be able to enjoy the local golf courses, downtown Farmer's Market, one of the many parks or walking trails, local campgrounds and plenty of lake and river activities such as swimming, boating, and canoeing. Biking enthusiasts will be able to enjoy 14 different bike loops that provide views of wetlands, valleys, rivers, lakes, and wildlife. In the winter months, residents enjoy curling, snowmobiling, ice fishing, sledding, ice skating, and hitting the slopes at the local ski resort at Cascade Mountain. Portage is also home to a segment of The Ice Age Trail, a 10,000-year-old trail that spans 1,200 miles of Wisconsin and travels through 30 counties. The trail is open year round for hiking, backpacking and snowshoeing.
Portage has a great small-town community vibe, while also being near other cities like Wisconsin Dells (20 min) and Madison (35 min) to provide even more activities.
Requirements:
MD or DO or equivalent
Wisconsin medical licensure required prior to start date.
Certification by or eligible for certification by American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP).
Successful completion of a fully accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.

DFMCH and its associated UW Health clinic operation has over 750 employees, including 171 faculty and an additional 261 clinical adjunct faculty located throughout the state. The DFMCH is committed to patient care while also offering outstanding educational and research programs. There are over 150 residents in our sponsored and academic partner programs, and more than 400 medical students train in the department each year, with the Madison residency program ranking fifth in the nation for 2023. In fiscal year 2022, our physicians and residents practicing at 17 clinics throughout the state managed over 358,000 patient visits an integral part of the department s success. Research funding from the NIH and other state, federal and private sources exceeded $9.8 million in fiscal year 2022 and supported several areas of interest including major research projects in pain management, addiction and substance misuse prevention and treatment, and infectious disease surveillance.
