Academic Opportunities
Hospital Internal Medicine (HIM) is one of the largest NP/PA practices at Mayo Clinic- Rochester. As NP/PA hospitalists, we pride ourselves by working at the top of our scope of practice/licensure with a significant amount of autonomy. Our providers are required to stay up to date with the latest evidence-based medicine and provide comprehensive care for a medically complex, diverse patient population. NP/PAs participate in all aspects of care of the hospitalized patient including admission, discharge, daily rounding, and patient education.
HIM is comprised of various medical services specializing in general internal medicine, geriatrics, telemetry, perioperative medicine, medical hematology and oncology, and telemedicine. There are a variety of staffing models for the various medical services, enabling physicians, NP/PAs, and Desk Operation Specialists (DOS) to work collaboratively. Our NP/PAs participate in 24/7 care including nights, holidays, weekends, and an on-call structure.
In addition to clinical practice, many of the NP/PA’s serve in respected positions within the division and institution. Leadership opportunities occur within administration, quality improvement, research, education, and personnel committees. Within the division, there are many opportunities to partner with colleagues, both physician and NP/PAs, in research and quality improvement projects. Additionally, the division of HIM serves as a training ground for NP and PA students, as well as Mayo medical students, visiting medical students, residents, and HIM fellows, providing ample opportunity to be involved in clinical education.
Ideal candidates for our NP/PA position have an extensive medical knowledge base, inpatient medical experience, and a continual desire to learn and grow as a health care provider. As a new provider in HIM, orientation is provided including learning the Mayo model of patient care, hospital medicine-focused learning modules reviewing current guidelines and standards of practice, in-person classes for EMR training, dictation training, ECG interpretation, ACLS/BLS, and simulation-based learning in our HIM Boot Camp.
