Job Description

Position Background

The Acute Pain Service (APS) physician is an anesthesiologist with specialized skills and expertise in regional anesthesia and medical management of the acute pain patient. This physician is a perioperative pain specialist who consults throughout the operative period, including in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative times.

Position Description

The Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS) is recruiting for a full-time anesthesiologist to serve as Director of the Acute Pain Service under the VA APS Expansion Program. The APS attendee will also have responsibilities as a staff anesthesiologist and must have the full credentialing and qualifications required to serve in this role. This includes, but is not limited to, pre-operative patient exam and assessment, intra-operative care utilizing monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia techniques on American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Class 1 through Class 5 patients, and post-operative care, including in the post-anesthesia care unit. The Staff Anesthesiologist provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, ICU, wards, and clinic settings as needed, to include on-call coverage.

We are seeking a candidate who can provide high-quality anesthesia care to veterans undergoing a wide variety of surgeries. SAVAHCS is the principal teaching affiliate with the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Medical students, residents, and fellows rotate at our facility. Therefore, the selected candidate must also be eligible for a faculty appointment with the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Arizona.

    Duties:

  1. Management and coordination of care of the service
  2. Management and placement of indwelling nerve block catheters and epidurals
  3. Inpatient pain consults for medical management, including acute and acute-on-chronic pain conditions
  4. Inpatient management of intravenous pain infusions such as ketamine and lidocaine
  5. Development and implementation of ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) and other quality protocols
  6. Placement of single-shot nerve blocks
  7. Coordinating continuity of care for inpatients who require follow-up with an outpatient chronic pain physician
  8. Providing education for trainees

In addition to clinical practice, the Acute Pain Service Director/ section chief is assigned the responsibility to:

1. Implement APS pain management services, standards, and quality assurance, including coordinating staffing and establishing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and guidelines as necessary.

2. Ensure local, regional, and national standards of care relative to the practice of regional anesthesia and acute pain management are followed.

3. Draft and define functional statements for all practitioners who provide services on the APS team.

4. Supervise and assign work schedules to all FTEs (Full-Time Equivalents) funded by the Acute Pain Service Expansion Program (APSEP), including administrative oversight of both Acute and Chronic APSEP-funded LIP (Licensed Independent Practitioners i.e., PA/NP, CRNA) positions.

The Staff Anesthesiologist's duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Sites of responsibility include personally providing direct patient care and supervision in the Operating Room, PACU (ECT and cardioversion), GI suite, bronchoscopy suite, cath lab, IR, and other locations as required.
  2. The practice model is approximately 95% CRNA/Resident supervision, 5% own cases.
  3. Anesthesiologists will be a part of the general pool, so experience with a wide variety of cases and regional anesthesia is useful.
  4. At home call is required with current 1 in 9 to 1 in 10 rotations.
  5. Must be American Heart Association BLS/ACLS certified. Recertification available on site.
  6. The hospital does not perform OB, pediatrics, or level 1 trauma cases.

Work Schedule: Full-time, permanent, Monday-Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with the option to work 4-10-hour shifts open as well.

Supervisory Controls

The Acute Pain Service Director reports to the Chief of Anesthesiology

  1. Supervisory responsibilities: The Acute Pain Service Director will supervise the activity and medical decision-making of the APS team members. This may include medical residents, fellows, CRNA, NP, PA, RN, and student team members. The SAVAHCS APSEP Team includes two full-time PAs and one full-time dedicated RN.

Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Anesthesiology.
  • Must have experience and expertise in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine.
  • Must be American Heart Association BLS/ACLS certified. Recertification available on site
  • Completion of a fellowship in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine is preferred but not required.
