Job Description

  1. Job Title: Neuro ICU Hospitalist (Neurocritical Care Intensivist)
  2. Organization: Regional Brain Institute (RBI)
  3. Service Sites:
    1. SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital—Oklahoma City, Comprehensive Stroke Center, 1000 N Lee Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102.
    2. Other RBI service sites may be available.
  4. Position Summary: RBI seeks a dedicated Neuro ICU Hospitalist (Neurocritical Care Intensivist) to provide expert care for critically ill neurological patients in the Neuro ICU and Step-Down Units at our Comprehensive Stroke Center, SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital— Oklahoma City.
  5. Your Role:
    1. Act as the first responder to Code Strokes, leading Code Stroke response team, managing acute stroke patients in acute care settings (e.g., thrombolytic administration, performing initial interpretations (“wet reads”) of neuroimaging (CT, CTA, CTP, MRI), in collaboration with Radiology, collaborating with stroke/vascular neurologists and neuro-interventionalists when necessary, etc.
    2. Serve as the primary admitting and attending physician in the Neuro ICU and Step-Down Units.
    3. Stabilize and optimize outcomes for critically ill neurological patients (“sickest of the sick”).
    4. Mitigate complications such as worsening cerebral edema, infarct or hemorrhagic conversion, electrolyte imbalance, intracranial pressure, and impact on other organs.
    5. Coordinate with consultants (e.g., Stroke/Vascular Neurology, Neuro-Interventionalists, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, etc.) to provide comprehensive care.
    6. Guide families on prognosis, treatment options, and end-of-life care.
    7. Assist with the management of inpatient patients who have/had stroke, neurocritical care, and related conditions.
    8. Coordinate with Stroke Floor Hospitalist, stroke navigators, nursing teams, and night- coverage providers.
    9. Coordinate with multidisciplinary team (PT, OT, ST, Case Management) to optimize patient outcomes.
    10. Manage patient census and coordinate transfers (inbound and among hospitalist teams) as needed.
    11. When stroke/neurocritical care census is low, provide general management of critical care and internal medicine cases.
  6. Schedule: On-site, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Shift duration may be reduced in the future.
  7. Privileges:
    1. Internal Medicine Core Privileges or Critical Care Core Privileges.
    2. Moderate Sedation for Non-Anesthesia Providers: Must meet one of the following:
      1. Current ACLS, ATLS, or PALS/NRP certification AND successful completion of a competency test (score ≥ 80%) on pharmacological agents used for sedation.
      2. Current board certification in Emergency Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, or Neonatology.
  8. Qualifications:
    1. MD/DO with board certification/eligibility in Internal Medicine, Neurology, or Critical Care Medicine.
    2. Neurocritical care experience is strongly preferred. Additional in-service stroke/neuro training is available.
    3. Strong clinical, leadership, and communication skills.
    4. Ability to work well in a busy, high-acuity environment.
    5. Physical Requirements (without limitation):
      1. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
      2. Ability to lift and move patients or assist with patient transfers as needed.
      3. Physical stamina and dexterity to perform procedures such as lumbar punctures and central lines.
      4. Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
      5. Physical fitness sufficient to meet the demands of a 12-hour shift.
