Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) was established in 1972 and is a nonprofit, 1,138-bed regional tertiary referral center made up of seven hospitals: General Hospital, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Plateau Medical Center, Teays Valley Hospital, Women and Children’s Hospital, and Charleston Surgical Hospital. A "Congestive Heart Failure Specialist," often referred to as a "Heart Failure Cardiologist" or "Advanced Heart Failure Specialist," is a medical professional with specialized training in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), providing comprehensive care including medication management, lifestyle modifications, advanced therapies like implantable devices, and coordination with other healthcare providers to optimize patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
· Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis:
Conduct thorough patient assessments, including medical history, physical examination, electrocardiograms (ECGs), echocardiograms, cardiac catheterization, and other diagnostic tests to accurately diagnose and stage heart failure.
· Treatment Planning:
Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs, including medication optimization (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, etc.), lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise), and consideration of advanced therapies like ventricular assist devices (VADs) or heart transplantation.
· Outpatient Management:
Regularly monitor patients in a dedicated heart failure clinic, providing ongoing assessment, medication adjustments, and education on self-management strategies to minimize symptoms and prevent complications.
· Inpatient Consultations:
Provide expert consultation to hospitalized patients with acute heart failure exacerbations, managing complex cases and guiding treatment decisions.
· Advanced Procedures:
Perform specialized procedures related to heart failure management, such as right heart catheterization, pulmonary artery pressure monitoring, and endomyocardial biopsy, depending on their training and expertise.
· Patient Education:
Educate patients and their families about heart failure, its symptoms, treatment options, and self-management strategies to promote adherence and quality of life.
· Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Work closely with other healthcare professionals including nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and primary care providers to ensure coordinated care for heart failure patients.
· Research and Quality Improvement:
Participate in clinical research studies related to heart failure management and contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the healthcare system.
Education
MD/DO from an accredited university medical school
Credentials
Graduate of an accredited ACGME cardiology residency program and subspecialty training in echocardiography
Board Certified with the ABIM in cardiology
board certified in cardiovascular disease and completed Fellowship in congestive heart failure
