Position Title: Board Certified Pathologist
Location: VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, University Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15240
Contract Type: Full-Time, Onsite
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (40 hours/week), including federal holidays

Position Summary

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System seeks a Board Certified Pathologist to provide comprehensive onsite pathology and laboratory services to eligible veterans. The successful candidate will deliver services consistent with the highest standards of the American Board of Pathology and VA policies, supporting patient care and the VA’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform a full range of pathology and laboratory services as would be expected in a modern civilian medical facility, meeting or exceeding national standards.
  2. Provide timely, accurate diagnostic services, including the interpretation of tissue, blood, and body fluid specimens.
  3. Communicate test results to providers and patients in accordance with VA and regulatory guidelines.
  4. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities, staff meetings, and committee work as required.
  5. Document all clinical and administrative work in the VA’s electronic health record system, ensuring compliance with privacy and information security regulations.
  6. Supervise and educate health professions trainees (HPTs) in accordance with VA and accrediting agency requirements.
  7. Adhere to all infection control, safety, and compliance protocols, including reporting patient safety incidents within 24 hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Education & Certification:
    1. Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy from an accredited institution.
    2. Board Certification in Pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPATH).
  2. Licensure:
    1. Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
    2. No history of restricted, suspended, revoked, or voluntarily surrendered licenses.
  3. Certifications:
    1. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (or equivalent).
    2. Valid DEA certificate.
    3. National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  4. Experience:
    1. Demonstrated proficiency in pathology, with verifiable ongoing competency and skills.
    2. Experience with electronic health records (EHR).
  5. Language:
    1. Fluent in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirements

  1. Completion of all VA-mandated annual training (e.g., EHR, infection control, privacy/HIPAA, workplace harassment, suicide prevention).
  2. Proof of current immunizations: negative TB test or IGRA (within past year), immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Tdap, annual influenza vaccination, and adherence to facility COVID-19 protocols.
  3. Compliance with all federal, state, and VA policies regarding privacy, security, and patient safety.
  4. Not listed on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
  5. Must be eligible to work in the United States and comply with all immigration and labor laws.
  6. Professional liability insurance, workers’ compensation, and other employment-related requirements must be met by the contractor.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in a VA or similar healthcare system.
  2. Prior teaching or supervisory experience with health professions trainees.
