Job Description

The VA Loma Linda Healthcare Care System is seeking a Compassionate, Mission-Oriented Primary Care Physician to serve our veterans at the Sy Kaplan VA Community Based Outpatient clinic.

The VA Loma Linda Healthcare System is actively recruiting Primary Care Physician Providers to care for our Veterans,  America’s Heroes. This exciting job opportunity awaits you in our state-of-the-art VA clinic in Palm Desert! The clinic provides primary care, behavioral health, telemedicine, preventive medicine, neurology, infectious disease, lab, and audiology services. Sy Kaplan VA Clinic also hosts the MOVE! weight management program supported by the VA National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. It is one of nine community-based outpatient clinics providing care to more than 80,000 veterans in the Inland Empire. Community-based outpatient clinics allow veterans to receive care close to where they live and increase access to health and wellness services. The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Advises and clinically supervises the mid-levels (nurse practitioners or physician assistants)
  • Advises and clinically supervises the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows)
  • Actively participate in Medical Center committees and teams.
  • Participate in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams.
  • Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities. Completes facility-wide mandatory education yearly.
  • Provides quality patient-centered patient care to outpatients for adults and older adults age 65+
  • Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal
  • Successfully integrates patient care activities in Primary Care Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community, such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based Health Care (HBHC), and private nursing homes.
  • Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients.
  • Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS in a timely manner.
  • Includes patient/family/significant other/ healthcare provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plans and in planning care on a continuum; assisting staff in the process of mutual goal-setting.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates care based on the specific requirements of the patient.
  • Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills.
  • Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems.
  • Participate in grading sessions for medical students and GME trainees assigned to their services.


Paid Time Off:  50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Retirement:  Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance:    Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure:  1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME:  Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice:  Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract:  No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting

Recruitment Incentive: (Sign on Bonus):$25,000 for highly qualified candidates.

Education Debt Reduction Program: Reimbursement Program, Pay off your school debt, tax-free): Repays qualifying student loan debt up to $200,000 tax-free for up to five years.

Tour of duty:  Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Candidates must: 

·                Must be a U.S. Citizen

·                Must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

·                Completed Internal Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Training.

·                  Preferred candidate must be board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice; Preferably 5 years of primary care experience; minimum of 3 years of Recent Active Primary Care Clinical Practice with women's health experience.
