Physician - Assistant Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service

VHA Physician Total Rewards:

  • Student loan repayment eligibility under EDRP.
  • Former EDRP participants may not reapply for this incentive.

Work Schedule:

  • Regular hours: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Pay: Competitive salary with annual performance bonuses and regular salary increases.
  • Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year, including:
    • 26 days of annual leave
    • 13 days of sick leave
    • 11 paid federal holidays
    • Possible 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • Retirement:
    • Traditional federal pension with 5 years vesting.
    • Federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
  • Insurance:
    • Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance, many of which can be carried into retirement.
  • Licensure:
    • Requires one full and unrestricted license from any US state or territory.
  • CME:
    • Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement for full-time physicians with board certification.
  • Malpractice:
    • Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
  • Contract Terms:
    • No Physician Employment Contract.
    • No significant restrictions on moonlighting.

About the Role:

The Physician - Assistant Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) will report to the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The successful applicant will be a licensed pathologist, board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in both anatomic and clinical pathology.


Anatomic Pathology Section Includes:

  • Surgical Pathology
  • Cytopathology
  • Dermatopathology
  • Hematopathology
  • Autopsy
  • Histology lab
  • Immunohistochemistry lab

Clinical Pathology Division Includes:

  • Blood Bank
  • Chemistry and Toxicology
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Phlebotomy
  • Point of Care testing
  • Urinalysis
  • Send-out testing
  • Potential in-house Flow Cytometry
