Anesthesiologists for the VA in Syracuse, NY
THE SHORT: We’re hiring Anesthesiologists for the VA in Syracuse, NY, to complement our exclusive CRNA contract at the same facility | $420/hr. | any state license | board certified or eligible

LOCATION: Syracuse VA Medical Center, 800 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210
START DATE and DURATION:
- ASAP after credentialing, currently planned through Jun 30th, 2030, with extensions.
- (Note: the duration is a contract between us and the Government. Like any other job, if life means you must leave, you just give us 60-day notice).
COMPENSATION (Rates are listed as 1099, all inclusive):
- M-F regular hours: $420/hr.
- On-Call (from home): $50/hr.
- Call-back (extremely rare): $450/hr. pay rounded to the hour (paid from arrival to hospital thru departure, 1hr minimum)
- We cover Med Mal
SCHEDULE:
- M-F 7am – 3:30pm, minus federal holidays
- Weekday call is 3:30pm – 7am the following day
- Weekend call is a 24-hour period from 7am to 7am the following day
- There is not a sleeping room at the facility; call-back is infrequent
- Rotation: all Anesthesiologists (both contract and federal) share in on-call responsibilities.

- Call-Back is very minimal: They estimate 100hrs of call-back for an entire year. That’s a 1.4% call-back rate, or alternatively, 2hrs total in a 7-day period.
- 1 Anesthesiologist and 1 CRNA on-call simultaneously
- Call from home - 40 min recall time
- Flexible scheduling – We develop the schedule in collaboration with the Anesthesiologists (just as we do with the 7 CRNAs currently on site). Anesthesiologists work together to ensure coverage and coordinate time off. For example, options can include a 3-weeks-on / 1-week-off rotation among 3 providers, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
- Any state license, full and unrestricted
- ACGME approved residency in Anesthesiology
- Board Certified / Board Eligible by the ABA
- BLS, ACLS
- DEA
- Experience: At least 3-5 years of relevant experience is preferred
- Previous VA Medical Center experience is a plus
- Must be able to pass background check as part of the VA’s security process.
MAKEUP of DEPARTMENT:
- 8 Anesthesiologists (not all are full time, so the equivalent of 5) – need 8 to be fully staffed.
- 5 CRNAs (with 2 PRN for full coverage)
- Number of ORs: 7
CASES:
- Case load: Approximately 10 surgical cases/day in the department
- Typical cases are general surgery cases (except hepatobiliary), vascular (open and endovascular), thoracic (no cardiac surgery), ENT, ophthalmology, urology, podiatry, orthopedics, spine cases (no craniotomy), out-of-OR procedures (GI, pulmonary, cath lab, and IR procedures – CRNAs mostly staff GI for out-of-OR). No transplants, trauma services, or OB
- No formal USGRA program at the hospital - Anesthesiologists do the majority of nerve blocks.
MODEL:
- Work independently and/or supervise Anesthesiology Residents and/or CRNAs. When supervising, Anesthesiologist is required to be in the OR during induction.
