Gastroenterologist – Beckley VA Medical Center

The Beckley VA Medical Center is looking for a Gastroenterologist to join our team.  The Beckley VAMC is small enough to connect with patients but big enough to still have some of the newest equipment available. At the Beckley VA Medical Center, our healthcare teams are deeply experienced and guided by the needs of veterans, their families, and caregivers.

Duties:

  • Perform full general gastroenterology examinations on established or newly consulted patients, including electronic consultations (eConsults) in the Gastroenterology clinics, inpatient wards or Emergency Department for signs or symptoms of gastrointestinal dysfunction.
  • The Gastroenterologist will ensure communication with the Hospitalists regarding patients and/or potential admissions.
  • Performing gastroenterology procedures including:
    • EGD (gastroscopy) Paracentesis
    • EGD with Peg Esophageal manometry
    • ERCP Liver biopsy
    • Colonoscopy 24 hr. pH monitor
  • Oversees the administration of conscious sedation.
  • Provides oversight to Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.
  • History and physical exams within 24 hours of admission
  • Progress notes daily for inpatients and for each encounter with outpatients
  • Consult notes within 24 hours of evaluating the patient
  • Discharge summaries within 10 days of hospital discharge
  • New or renewal of prescriptions, transfer summaries and/or discharge instructions
  • Participation in quality assurance programs and chart reviews;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and promotes performance improvement in meeting organizational goals
  • Conducts point of care audits and peer reviews when requested by the Chief of Medicine.
  • Exercises corporate citizenship by serving as a leader and/or active member of Medical Center committees as requested
  • Attends Medical Service Staff meetings and meetings of the Medical/Dental staff.
  • Teaches effectively and creatively and provides guidance to others involved in the delivery of the educational program.

Pay:  Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases 
Paid Time Off:  50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement:  Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance:  Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure:  1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME:  Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice:  Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract:  No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting
Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, Subject to change depending on the needs of the service.
