Job Description

The Washington DC VA Medical Center located in the heart of Washington DC, the nation’s capital, home to the seat of government, and has fantastic cultural offerings, such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center, and a host of fantastic restaurants. Our hospital provides primary care and specialty health services, including bariatric surgery, mental health care, palliative and hospice care, suicide prevention, women's health care, and more. The physician shall provide Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine services required for VA beneficiaries. The physician shall provide care at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. All labor and services shall be provided including management, supervision, teaching, consultations and reports. Performance shall be according to the requirements contained in this Functional Statement. Care shall be appropriately documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with standard community practice.

Job Duties:

  • The GEC physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care in the programs of the GEC. Performs assessments and develops treatment plans. Ensures documentation of medical assessments and observations are documented accurately and in the proper document.
  • Responsible for the proper delegation of duties, teaching and medical supervision of subordinate personnel.
  • Implements, evaluates and is consulted on medical policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Establishes interpersonal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication.
  • Provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider.
  • Analyzed data for quality improvement and assurance.
  • Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
  • Cross Coverage and take calls (remote overnight) for GEC programs to include, CLC, GeriPACT, Inpatient/Outpatient Palliative programs as needed
  • The provider shall follow Medical Center policies for referrals or consults.
  • The GEC physician shall be required to consult with other specialty practitioners for consultative opinions and continuation of care.
  • The provider shall inform patients of the required referral or consult by indicating the specialty involved.

  Clinical Duties:

  • Provides a full range of services, including assessment and using standard of care techniques in providing quality of care within the specialties of geriatric primary care, and basic palliative medicine practice.
  • Perform appropriate evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment of patients within GeriPACT.
  • Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with IDT members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive Veteran-centered care.
  • Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal/abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions based on available information.
  • Responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the medical center or healthcare system, as appropriate.
  • Ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with relevant accreditation agencies, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN 5 standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and licensure, and HIPPA policies.
  • Performs other tasks within the scope of approved practice and privilege, as assigned by the Chief of GEC and the DC VAMC Medical System.

The GeriPACT physician is responsible to the Chief of GEC, or designated supervisor.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
