The Physiatrist is a licensed, credentialed healthcare professional who functions as the Service Chief for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&RS) Service at the Marion VA Health Care System, which includes the Evansville Health Care Center. Areas of responsibility include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Chiropractor Services, Audiology, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Brace and Amputee, Wheelchair and Mobility, Electromyography/Nerve Conduction, and General Physiatry. The Physiatrist works independently with administrative guidance from the Chief of Staff. Clinical performance is reviewed through peer review, ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE), and service-level quality programs.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for the overall performance of the PM&RS Service
- Expected to practice in his/her discipline to maintain clinical proficiency approximately 25% of the time
- Ensures that high-quality patient care is delivered in a resource-efficient manner
- Responsible for resource management, including position management and budgeting
- Be knowledgeable and proficient with VA performance measures and the principles of system redesign, including implementation and promotion of outpatient clinic access and hospital flow
- Promotes an effective mix, coordination and support of clinical care by evaluating current and potential patient needs, clinical workload and resources, and special programs/mandates.
- Promotes and evaluates standards of clinical competence and conduct for staff which are maintained through compliance with the credentialing and privileging processes, monitoring and evaluation of clinical practice, peer review, OPPE/FPPE processes and other appropriate quality assurance activities.
- Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
- Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures
- Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
- Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy and VHA policy
- Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion
- Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
