Hector Carbajal
I started working in Houston in 2012, where I trained in residency at Houston Methodist Hospital - Texas Medical Center. Later, I practiced as a Locums physician in several large Texas cities including Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas. This helped me to understand the practice of hospital medicine across Texas.
I returned to Houston Methodist Hospital to work as a Hospitalist focused on end-stage liver disease (Liver Transplant Program) and also hematology/oncology (leukemia & lymphoma). These patients can become extremely ill in a short period of time. We have built a cohesive and experienced team of hospital doctors that can effectively step up to the challenge of dynamic and complex illness related to organ failure and cancer.
Our hepatology-focused hospitalist service line is tasked with effectively addressing the acute medical issues that arise in patients with advanced liver or biliary disease. We have developed close working relationships with trusted medical specialties that frequently assist us to address the complications of end-stage liver disease. Some of the frequent complications we handle are: GI bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, fluid retention, portal thrombosis, and hepatocellular cancer.
Our hematology/oncology-focused hospitalist service line is also tasked with addressing the acute medical issues that arise in patients with malignant hematology/oncology conditions. Our past experience with organ failure lends itself to assisting our oncology team with the care of patients with advanced cancer. We frequently see patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, MDS, aplastic anemia, solid tumors, and many other malignant cancers. Our hospitalists are skilled at taking care of patients that may need potent chemotherapy regimens.
Our orthopedics service line helps take care of patients with bone fractures, elective joint replacements, and prosthetic complications. We work with specialists in Hip, Knee, Foot & Ankle, Shoulder and Spinal orthopedics.
We have also developed a close working relationship with a select and trusted team of multidisciplinary subspecialists that see a large number of oncology and hepatology cases within their respective fields. Some of the complications of advanced cancer that we are skilled at taking care of in the hospital include thrombosis/embolism, cancer pain, anemia, pancytopenia, tumor lysis, delirium, hypercalcemia, neutropenic fever, mucositis, colitis, malnutrition amongst many other potential complications and oncologic emergencies.
As my practice has grown, I have reflected on how wonderful it was to study with such great professors and mentors throughout my career. I wanted to give back and also teach. In 2022, I started teaching medical students and nurses.
